Basic Officer Course
Long and Short Range Firing
“Pistol Qual”
Welcome back. Let’s kick this week’s motivation. In Week 6, your Marine will continue each morning with a 2.5-mile hike to the range, followed by a 2.5-mile return hike. These hikes will continue to build endurance and mental toughness, ensuring that your Marine is physically and mentally prepared for the challenges of marksmanship training.

RMC (Range Management Complex) Long Range Shooting
At the Range Management Complex (RMC), your Marine will sharpen their marksmanship through both long- and short-range training. On the Long Range Bay, they’ll test their precision at extended distances, applying advanced techniques to consistently hit distant targets under challenging conditions. Through the Range Marksmanship Training Program (RMTP), they’ll also train at short range, where the focus is on rapid, accurate engagement of close targets—skills essential in fast-moving, close-quarters combat. Together, these exercises build confidence, discipline, and the versatility every Marine needs to fight and win in any environment.

Introduction to Night Vision Goggles (NVGs)
This week also includes an introduction to Night Vision Goggles (NVGs), a critical piece of equipment for operating effectively in low-light or nighttime environments. Your Marine will not only learn the fundamentals of NVG use but will also conduct live night shoots, applying these skills to engage targets in the dark. This training ensures they gain the confidence and capability to fight and win, even when visibility is at its lowest—a vital skill for modern combat scenarios.
Pistol Range: Pre-Qualification and Qualification
The week concludes on the pistol range, where your Marine will take part in both pre-qualification and official qualification. In preparation, they will spend several days dry-firing and live-firing, building muscle memory, confidence, and consistency before the test. During training, Marines fire from multiple positions and distances, practicing everything from controlled, deliberate shots to rapid engagements under time constraints. Emphasis is placed on safe handling, drawing, reloading, and firing with accuracy and speed. The qualification is more than just a test—it confirms that your Marine is confident and proficient with the pistol, a vital secondary weapon they may be called upon to use in combat or close-quarters situations.
Daily Weapons Maintenance
In addition to their time on the range, your Marine will be responsible for daily weapons maintenance. This routine is vital for ensuring that their rifles remain in top working condition, reducing the risk of malfunctions during qualification. Through meticulous care and attention to detail, they will learn the importance of maintaining their equipment to the highest standard.
This week at TBS was a whirlwind of shooting and endurance! As your Marine navigates this demanding week, they will continue to develop the skills and confidence required to lead Marines in any environment. We look forward to keeping you informed about their progress in the weeks ahead.
Semper Fidelis,
SgtMaj Paul Davis (USMC Ret)
