Air superiority is all about winning the skies. It is fighter jet against fighter jet vying for control of the skies.

The B-21 Raider is a 6th-generation stealth strategic bomber that is designed to give the U.S. Air Force deep penetration access to near-peer adversaries like China and Russia. The Pentagon and Northrop Grumman have been quite tight, and rightly so, in terms of the exact capabilities of the new aircraft.

But could a strategic bomber like the upcoming B-21 Raider take on an air superiority role?

“With the U.S. Air Force now signaling increasing uncertainty regarding the fate and form of its new stealth fighter, and emerging technologies allowing for a broader capability set in larger platforms than ever before, the future of the air superiority mission may be facing its most dramatic shift since the advent of stealth,” Alex Hollings, Editor-in-Chief of Sandboxx News and host of AirPower on YouTube, said in a recent video.

“This role, once reserved for only the most aerobatically maneuverable and powerful tactical aircraft, could soon be absorbed by larger and undoubtedly more sluggish platforms that rely on superior stealth, long-range sensors, and advanced new weapons to dominate the skies. Platforms like the B-21 Raider,” Hollings added.
