Last week, Ed Sheeran released a remixed version of his latest single “Perfect,” featuring Beyoncé – aka Queen Bey – and it is, pun intended, the PERFECT DUET.

After playing the song on repeat for the entire day, and cleaning out our entire office supply of tissues we came to the realization that this song, “Perfect Duet,” is the ultimate song for all military relationships. We took the time to break it down for you line by line here:
“‘Cause we were just kids when we fell in love…”
For a majority of military relationships they begin at a very young age, when a lot of men and women enlist or join the military. The majority of service members enlist straight out of high school, usually at 17 or 18 years old.
“When you said you looked a mess…”
Let’s be honest, most people think they look (or feel) a mess a lot of the time. But when you’re in a relationship with someone in the military, you may feel like a mess more often than others, and that’s OK. From dealing with long distance, to having little to no communication, to experiencing emotional highs and lows, and trying to keep it all together on the home front, it’s really easy to feel like a complete and total mess. But don’t worry. Ed Sheeran – and your service member – still think you look perfect.
“Well I found a man, stronger than anyone I know…”
Whether you’ve found yourself a man or woman in the military, you’re bound to think they are the strongest of anyone you know, both mentally and physically. Being in the military is a mental and physical battle, and being involved with this organization day in and day out makes you incredibly strong. Let’s not forget though that you are incredibly strong for enduring this type of relationship through all of it’s ups and downs. Between the two of you, you are the strongest couple.
“Fightin’ against all odds…”
While some days are better than others, those in a military relationship can understand feeling like all of the odds are stacked against them. A military relationship is one in which you have to understand, and be OK with, knowing that your significant other’s job is often their first priority by necessity, and one in which you may not have a say in a lot of important decisions. Living apart from each other for months on end, or having little to no contact with them, is truly a harsh reality of a military relationship. But, love is stronger than anything, and will help you get through it- all.
“I have faith in what I see. Now I know I have met an angel in person…“
Faith is one of the biggest keys to a successful military relationship. Having faith that you will get through the hard times, and faith that your service member will always come home to you is often one of the most important tenets to your relationship. In other words, you are each other’s guardian angel. They’re your hero watching over and protecting you always, and you’re the spirit that keeps them going, motivates them, and keeps them in your prayers at night so that they always come home.
